FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Fluvial Geomorphic Approach Wins “National” and “Best
of
the Best” Reclamation Awards
Las Vegas, NV (1 October 2004) - The U.S. Department of Interior
(DOI) identified
reclamation projects using the new GeoFluv™ approach to land reclamation
as the “Best of the Best” at its Excellence in Surface Coal Mining
Reclamation Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada last week. The GeoFluv™ approach
is the foundation for Carlson Software’s new Natural Regrade software for
landform design.
The DOI’s Office of Surface Mining (OSM) presented two awards to BHP Billiton’s
San Juan Coal Company for reclamation projects designed using the GeoFluv™ approach.
OSM’s Excellence in Surface Coal Mining Reclamation Awards recognize outstanding
projects that “have established examples for others to follow.” OSM
presented San Juan Coal Company a National Award “for achieving the most
exemplary mining and reclamation in the country”, and the prestigious “Best
of the Best” award for the top project overall.
U.S. DOI/OSM stated that “the grading techniques and channel design used
at the San Juan Mine has been called the most innovative reclamation technology
that has been developed for western coal mining during the past 25 yearsm ...
a design process based on fluvial geomorphic principles, so the reclaimed topography
is more stable, diverse, and resistant to damage from flash flooding than traditional
reclaimed land ...”
Nicholas Bugosh, the inventor of this innovative reclamation approach called
GeoFluv™, joined Carlson Software in 2003 to computerize the approach and
make GeoFluv™ available as user friendly computer software to the greatest
possible body of users. The new Natural Regrade software, based on the GeoFluv™ approach,
was previewed by Carlson Software (www.carlsonsw.com)
at the 2004 MineExpo in
Las Vegas, Nevada.
“The software provides an exciting new way to create stable and cost-effective
landform designs,“ said Bruce Carlson, company president. Natural Regrade
helps the user create a GeoFluv™ design, calculate the material balance
for the design, and optimize material handling for design construction.
GeoFluv™ has broad applications to landform designs. Reclamation projects,
as well as new construction for storm water control, housing subdivisions, golf
courses, etc., can benefit from the new software.
The Natural Regrade software interfaces smoothly with machine control software
for additional efficiency in constructing the design. Machine control uses Global
Positioning System (GPS) satellite-technology to eliminate the need to stake
designs in the field and can deliver great time and dollar savings during construction.
Carlson Software is presently conducting final testing on the Natural Regrade
module and will release it soon to those who want to be a part of this new approach
to landform design.
